AD&D Alumni, Anthony Zachry, graduated the program in 2012 and has since made extraordinary achievements in his apparel design career. He is now working for Michael Kors and was gracious enough to take time out of his busy NYC schedule to chat with us about his past, present, and future in the industry.
What year did you graduate the program?
AZ: 2012
What was your first job after graduating from AD&D?
AZ: I was a freelance patternmaker/sample sewer with Dorothy Orzel! My first full-time gig was an assistant tech designer at EDUN.
What specific skills did you learn in school that helped you prepare for your job?
AZ: Every skill set really. Grading, patternmaking, construction, and even social skills! We all have that “one” coworker.
What is your current job title and what are your responsibilities?
AZ: My title right now is Associate Denim Designer/Tech for Michael Kors. I do trend research, wash development, meet with mills, design denim in all categories, make protos, and I follow through with a style until production. I do a lot of fitting, pattern corrections, evaluate construction, and issue grade rules.
Have you met Michael Kors?
AZ: I just had my first proto review with him!
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
AZ: Being a VP/Director of Tech Design. Or being a head patternmaker somewhere. I also thought it would be really cool to work for a denim manufacturer or a launderer/wash house.
Who are your current fashion icons?
AZ: Tilda Swinton, Anna Dello Russo, and Ciara (of course).
Which designer/s are really inspiring you these days?
AZ: I have always been a huge fan of Proenza Schouler! I’ve been diggin’ The Row and this new brand Protagonist. For men’s I love me some Henrik Vibskov or Damir Doma.
What was your favorite aspect of the AD&D program?
AZ: Being in a community of aspiring creatives was really nice! The people really make it enjoyable. Academically? I’d say how everything is very hands-on. I’m a mega nerd so I loved all of the classes.
What advice would you offer students currently enrolled in the program?
AZ: Your instructors and your peers are your best friends when you’re trying to get a job in the industry, at any point of your career. Networking is essential and your reputation is important. It’s a small world so keep all of your bridges safe.
