Alumni Spotlight- Rafael Soto

2

Rafael Soto is an alumni of the AD&D program with a very impressive resume. From New York to France, he has designed for several major brands and now owns and operates Rafael Soto INC. based right here in Seattle. We asked Rafael some questions about his design career and what it takes to be successful in this business.

What year did you graduate the program?

RS: 1989

What different jobs have you had since graduating from AD&D?

RS: I lived in Seattle for ten years, New York  for ten years, France for two years, and five years in Dallas. I have designed denim for Levi’s, Diesel, Union Jeans, William Rast, and now for my own brand Rafael Soto INC. I have also designed full collections for men’s and women’s clothing, from working with master tailor Martin Greensfield, to overseeing five private label brands for JCPenney.

What specific skills did you learn in school that helped you prepare for your job?

RS: From the tailoring program with professor Star, to patternmaking, grading, and construction; each skill allowed me to understand every aspect of design. You need it all to be at the top of your game.

What is your current job title and what are your responsibilities?

RS: I am currently the CEO of Rafael Soto INC. We are the first 100% American produced line of luxury men’s clothing. We are also an apparel consulting firm.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

RS: I see myself expanding my on-line collection of men’s luxury clothing, producing 50% of everything right here in Seattle.

Which designer/s are really inspiring you these days?

RS: Tom Ford, Kim Jones, and Simon Spurr.

What was your favorite aspect of the AD&D program?

RS: The men’s tailoring class. Nothing has helped me more to achieve excellence.

What advice would you offer students currently enrolled in the program?

RS: This is one of the hardest programs I have ever taken. You have to design the product, draft the pattern, construct the garment and grade it. You will love one thing in the process or all, but the more you learn, the more valuable you will be and the more you will make. Love what you do!

Is there anything you’d like to add about the AD&D program?

RS: Each and every class offers a skill set that you will utilize in the industry. Add your own personal style and taste to these skills and you will succeed. I used everything I learned and found myself going back to reference AD&D material all the time.
